One of this generations Great JRPGs

In 360, hdd, videogames, xbox 360 on January 31, 2009 by Social Gamer

Well let me begin with what a JRPG is for those that don’t know. In simple terms it’s the abbreviation for the words Japanese Role Playing Game. Simple right? Just click on the link above for the Wiki detailed information of JRPG(s).

I have been into these types of game for dare I say around 20 years. I have played imported jrpg(s) with complete printed out translation scripts, now that’s a geek if can say so…and I can. LoL

To get to the point of the title the game in reference I am referring to is Lost Odyssey on the Xbox 360. To begin with if you have ever played any of the Final Fantasy series games then you gave a perfect idea of what this game is like in both presentation, battle system, and story progression. Lost Odyssey was produced by Hironobu Sakaguchi, the creator of the famed Final Fantasy series.

Lost Odyssey uses a traditional turn-based battle system seen in most Japanese role-playing games, similar to early Final Fantasy iterations. There are two types of characters that the player controls. “Mortals” gain skills by leveling up, but can benefit from additional skills by equipping accessories. “Immortals” do not know any skills initially, but instead gain skills by “linking” with a mortal character that is currently part of the battle formation, earning skill points in battle towards complete learning of the skill. Immortals can also learn skills from accessories by equipping them in the same manner, much like in Final Fantasy IX. Once a skill is learned, the player can then assign these skills to a limited number of skill slots, initially starting at three but able to be expanded via “Slot Seed” items or skills. Immortals also have the ability to auto-revive in battle should they lose all their hit points.

Lost Odyssey is set in a world in which a “Magic-Industrial Revolution” is taking place. While magic energy existed in all living creatures beforehand, it suddenly became far more powerful thirty years before the beginning of the game. Because of this, it has affected society greatly, with devices called “Magic Engines” harnessing this power for lighting, automobiles, communication, and biological augmentation of monsters. However, such progress has also caused two nations; the kingdom of Gohtza, and the Republic of Uhra, recently changed from a monarchical society; to develop new and more powerful weapons of mass destruction. A third nation, the Free Ocean State of Numara, has remained neutral, though it is falling into disarray.

To make thing easier on your self I recommend taking your time through the story exploring every nook and cranny of the environments. Talking to everyone and walking into certain areas will trigger a memory. Memory sequences were penned by an award-winning Japanese short story writer, Kiyoshi Shigematsu, who worked directly with the game’s producer Hironobu Sakaguchi on Kaim’s backstory, while Sakaguchi alone wrote the game’s main story.

I remember one part that I won’t mention that actually almost made me want to cry..well my eyes had something in them so they got watery..LoL The game spans 4 DVDs do to allot of CG and in game engine cut scenes and even blend the transition from CG to actual game play so smoothly that you don’t even know that the game is back to actual game play. Just breath taking in my honest opinion. This game would of sold more if it were called Final Fantasy because take it from me when i tell you this is a Final Fantasy game in disguise. The game’s graphics and high production values were some of the best seen on the XBOX 360, and long load times and frame rate issues that most gamers complained about are now nearly null and void after the NXE update to allow for full installs of your games onto the 360 HDD. Warning though if you plan on installing all of the disks at one time it will take about 5 minutes for each disk with an average size of 5 – 6GB of space needed for each disk. But for people with the 20GB HDD need not worry just install the disk that you are on and un-install that disk once you change disks and then install the next one. You will not change or damage any of the saved progression.  Loading from the HDD is more than 2x as fast as disk loading. So install it if at all possible.

OK, so now I am at the end of the story and by the end of the game you will be able to fly and control a hybrid Jet/Speedboat/Sub Marine to go from place to place and even able to dock it into a huge ship and then you can control the huge ship to travel great distances on the world map. Very Final Fantasy-ish.. LoL

This is the Lost Odyssey Theme song:

I hope you enjoyed this Lost Odyssey brief and if you love classic style JRPG(s) and you own a n Xbox 360 you owe it to your self to have this game in your collection.

Leave a comment on your thoughts. This was one of those games that was split down the middle as far as reviews go. But as you can tell by now I love the game. I am hoping the when Final Fantasy XIII come out later this year or maybe even in early 2010..LoL I will get the same if not more of this style of role playing game.

New Final Fantasy XIII trailer (Jan 2008 release)

In Playstation 3, social, streaming video, update, videogames, xbox 360 on January 31, 2009 by Social Gamer Tagged: , ,

I know a lot of blogs and websites are posting the new FFXIII trailer and I said why not jump on in as well? But, unfortunately I don’t have press access to my own direct file of the video so I am posting the video from youtube.com. It is one of the best versions I found on the site. I can’t believe that I am excited for yet another Final Fantasy game. I guess it’s because it’s an all new story and not just another remake of a remake. I won’t hold my breath and will just sit tight and look at this video and drool at the sexy eye candy.
Enjoy,

Added the latest FFXIII trailer to Blog

In social on January 30, 2009 by Social Gamer

I have decided to completely embed the newest Final Fantasy Trailer to my blogs layout. I for one am amazed by the visuals in this game, I hope they will be ported to the Xbox 360 perfectly matching the PS3 version. According to Square Enix the 360 version will not be compromised due to the DVD format or it’s graphical capabilities. I will be buying this game on day one and if there is some crazy 100 dollar collectors edition I will be picking that version up for sure.

So the question that I give to you is:
What version will you be picking up?

I love the E-mails from Atlus they are usually on products that i would be interested in and for the most part they are fun to read.
I actually look forward to Atlus Updates/Spam..lol
But not just a few minutes ago I just recieved this odd E-Mail and it didn’t have any text in it and the subject line only had question marks in it. No spamware detected and it was from the actual website that registered at. So I wonder if this is a virul hint at something cool and new from Atlus.

A Mass Effect PS3 port has been denied

In social on January 23, 2009 by Social Gamer

Today during my daily news feeds Play.tm reports on the future of the Mass Effect franchise. Many rumors on the web lean towards a PS3 port of the original game or at least a port of ME2? Now there is no concrete evidence that I have come accross as of yet. I am under the impression that the deal was set with microsoft prior to the buy out by EA. So I wonder how much influance EA has on the issue now that BioWare is owned by EA?

Heaven on Earth…

In social on January 22, 2009 by Social Gamer

Today I came back from the dentist’s office and now that I am home bored and feeling all numb from the Novocain I went on the hunt for the next big classic or modern gaming event(s). I know that thier are many events around the US at any given time or place.

The thing with me is that I wanted to find an event that would be close to the east coast. I have been saving up money for just an event. I asume I will need funds for hotel, transportation to and from the event and also for local traveling (bars, clubs) and also food and GAMES..!
From what I’ve found I am looking at TooManyGames event and the VGXPO both are doable and would be fun to attend.

The latter is really just a day trip but in all reality the Video Game eXpo seems like the event to be at.
This is gonna be the year I do many of my projects that I have been putting on hold for about a year or so do to starting a new company with my wifey.
This is gonna be my year dam it..lol
I want to get an official gaming site up and running with a few writers and hope to get to more and more gaming events.
Personally I am an old school gamer and also an avid reader of the gaming business side of things.

I have so many ideas for this local gaming site with gaming nights at my theater and tournaments and parties for midnight game launches.
More to come very soon. I really hope to be able to migrate this blog over to my real site once that day hits.

The Bitbag broke news on G4TV’s XPLAY..

In social on January 21, 2009 by Social Gamer

I have been a fan of The Bitbag for many months now and from participating in on the show as a guest listener and as a fan of the site I was shocked that I saw on XPLAY The Bitbag mentioned on today’s Gaming Update.

I just want to give a shout out to Torrence the owner of the site and congratulate him all all of his success and real reporting. I am so glad to see this site get props on the news instead of another site cut and pasting articles and taking all the credit for it.

The Bitbag is a great site for “true gamers” so if you want an uncensored gaming site with original content and raw and uncut reviews and debates head on over and register and sign up for the podcast on itunes and add tordavis to your Twitter follows. Torrence Davis is a down to earth and real guy. One love to The Bitbag.

Gears of War 2 title update available now..!

In social on January 21, 2009 by Social Gamer

Here is the list of fixes that are in the Gears of War 2 title update that is available now.

Exploit Fixes

Title Update 2 fixes these possible exploits, where under certain circumstances:
A player could melee or grenade tag through certain walls.
A player could equip a shield and a two-handed weapon simultaneously.
A player could make their shield invisible.
A player could become invisible.
A player could do a “super” mantle or “kung fu flip,” flying high into the air.
A player could gain unlimited ammo with the Lancer Assault Rifle.
A player could fire while roadie running (also known as “crabwalking”).
A player could pick up a weapon while sliding into cover.
A player could walk forward while firing a deployed mortar.
A player could force an opponent to be stuck in the down but not out (DBNO) position.
A player could prevent other players from picking up a heavy weapon.
A player could pick up a dropped meatflag without having to knock him down.
A ragdolled player could be killed without ever going DBNO.
A player could roadie run while firing the Scorcher Flamethrower.
A player could get stuck while evading, though they could continue shooting in any direction.
A player could concuss themselves under the stairs on the River map.

General Fixes

Title Update 2 fixes these other issues as well:
An issue with client-side hit detection of the Gnasher Shotgun. The fix makes the shotgun more reliable in high-latency situations.
An issue where players could have shotgun or Boomshot rounds fire into the ground when shooting from the hip.
A split-screen issue where one player transitioning to the death battle camera disrupted input from the other player.
An issue that could cause players’ Look sensitivity to be changed to their Zoom sensitivity while zooming in, zooming out, and firing.
An issue that could cause players to get stuck if they tried to pick up a heavy weapon while firing the shotgun at the same time.
An issue where players could become stuck if they kicked over a shield while ragdolled from a smoke grenade.
An issue where bots were unable to kick over a shield that was planted backward.
An issue where players who quit during voting didn’t show up in the end game stats, which meant other players couldn’t easily provide negative feedback on them.
An issue where players couldn’t chainsaw enemy meatshields if the meatshields were already damaged.
An issue where some players would not see the animation of a meatshield being chainsawed.
An issue where players could not chainsaw an opposing team meatshield in a game type that doesn’t allow respawns (for example, Warzone and Execution).
An issue where a player partway through the act of raising or lowering the chainsaw did not transition into a duel when attacked from the front with a chainsaw.
An issue where occasionally a player waiting to respawn could not respawn when repeatedly hitting the left trigger to switch cameras.
An issue where some teammates couldn’t communicate between rounds in games type that don’t allow respawns, because dead team members were left in the dead radio channel until the next round started.
An issue where a DBNO player could be seen as standing if knocked DBNO while reloading the mortar.
An issue where a player joining a Private Xbox LIVE game in progress from another specific type of game could potentially lose HUD functionality.
An issue on the Flood map where a player’s dying from Imulsion did not trigger a death message or penalize the player as other environmental deaths did.
An issue with Guardian games where if the leader is the last player killed on a team, the round may not end, due to the respawn timer.
A campaign issue where the gamer picture would not be awarded when the game is completed on Insane.
An issue where a player would continue to fire the flamethrower and damage other players if that player was knocked DBNO while firing it.
An issue that could cause a player to get stuck while moving and quickly attempting to aim the mortar at the same time.
An issue with Horde games where clients didn’t receive the “waiting for host” message after they failed a wave.
A Horde split-screen issue that could cause a team to get –2 billion in score, which when posted to the leaderboards looked like +2 billion.
An issue where dead players may not show up in the metadata for multiplayer photos.
A system link issue where if a multiplayer match and a co-op game were hosted at the same time on the same LAN, neither could be joined.
Additional miscellaneous bug fixes.

Balancing

Title Update 2 makes these balancing changes:
Made planted proximity grenade mines much easier to shoot off the surface they’re planted on, by giving them 50 percent less health.
Set grenades to respawn less frequently. When a player picks up grenades from a spawned location, a new set of grenades does not respawn until the previous grenades have been used.
Increased the penalty to rank for players who quit Public Xbox LIVE matches early.
Buffed the flamethrower to have stopping power (to slow a charging enemy) and to cause a chainsaw interrupt (to force the opponent to lower a revved chainsaw).
Removed the ability to instantly shoot coming out of a roadie run.
Added additional spawn protection to prevent proximity grenade mines and chainsaws from killing a player within 5 seconds after spawning.
Balanced grenade spawn cycling on the Hail map so that both teams have equal access to both types of grenades.
We continue to test internally and monitor online gameplay to determine what else may need adjusting.

Improvements

Title Update 2 makes these new improvements:
Changed Annex games to use execution rules, to prevent players from leaving DBNO opponents on the ground to bleed out.
Made Horde waves count toward the “Party Like It’s 1999″ achievement. Each wave is counted as one round.
Added the ability, during Submission games, to see the flag’s final destination by using Tac/Com.
Increased the frequency of most of the toasts for in-game achievement progression.
Added achievement progression numbers to the War Journal.
Added 7 new DLC-based achievements worth 175 points (progress toward them starts after Title Update 2 is applied):
“Skeletons in Your Closet” (20 points): Complete waves 1 through 10 on all Flashback Map Pack maps in Horde (any difficulty).
“Trial by, and on, Fire” (20 points): Complete waves 1 through 10 on all Combustible Map Pack maps in Horde (any difficulty).
“More Mystery, Less History” (15 points): Win a multiplayer match on each of the 5 Flashback Map Pack maps (any mode except Wingman).

“Forged in the Fire” (15 points): Win a Wingman match on each of the 3 Combustible Map Pack maps.
“Annex: Now with Execution Rules” (75 points): Win an Annex match on each of the Flashback and Combustible Map Pack maps (Public only).

The ebony black Xbox 360 Elite is very sexy. The shine on it is more in the likes of a PS3 system. In any case this is one of the best looking official case mods.
